I had such a great time with the Hobbit Haiku project that I thought it would be fun to do it again with the Lord of The Rings series, and throw it open to others to contribute.
So here is how I want this to work, if you are interested in contributing a haiku to the project please add a comment below on which chapter you want to take. For now one chapter per person, I will update the list as the chapters get claimed.
I’ll post the first haiku on the first of February, I would then like each participant to post their haiku on the day of the month matching to their chapter and link back to this post. Tag your post LOTRHaiku to help others find the project.
Check back as the start of the event approaches, I’ll update this post as needed.
[UPDATE 1/29] Ok folks, since we are short on participants feel free to claim a second (or third ;)) chapter to cover. Also any suggestions to how I might modify the project for the next book to make it more appealing please let me know.

And in case you want to use it go ahead and grab my featured image or this sidebar graphic.
I’ll do 11 – A Knife in the Dark!
Cool! I’ll be looking forward to your haiku on the 11th!
So, do I post it in the comments of this post or do a separate post on my blog and link back to here?
On the 11th post it on your blog and link back. Think of it like Rob’s genre challenge but with a posting schedule.
Okay. I’m excited! I hope mine makes sense…
I’m sure it will. 🙂
I’ve updated the rules.
There are rules?
just that I was saying only one per person originally… 😉
oh and the “post on the date”
otherwise…
I’m in, Lathrop. I’ll take #10, Strider
Cool I look forward to your post on the 10th
Can I convince you to remind me? I’ll probably forget.
Sure thing.
Hey, if you would like to claim another one go for it.
I may! Who knows?
cool. just let me know so I can mark the list.
okay, Just a sec.
Okay! I’ll take number 5, 7 and 14.
Great! Done!
The chapters I picked happen to be my favorite chapters in the book. Dang! Now I’ll have to check the book out and re-read it all again, just so I can be inspired properly.
Happy to be of assistance. 🙂
Also looking forward to finding out exactly how these are to be submitted. Do I email them or what?
just post them to your blog with a link to this post. I should get a ping back and I will link the post back to your post. Kinda like a blog hop (I think)
I will probably end up doing a summary post/page at the end of everything also.
Dan Dan the Art Man is thinking of podcasting a reading of it too.
That would be freakin’ awesome!
Can I do Chapter 2? 🙂
It’s yours! I look forward to your post on the second!!
Yay! 😀
I’m opening up for more than one chapter per person since the turn out has been low if you are interested.
I’m rather drowning in my own projects at the moment, but pleased to see that Cimmorene is once again involved! Now I understand why she was reading this post to me… she learns things best reading them aloud… hmm, maybe I can get her to do an audio recording of her READING the haiku…
Hmmm…. now there is a follow up idea…
I’ve got good equipment and I do intend to follow up on this. She has done audio recordings of her telling stories or reading stuff before.
Cool. If the other participants are up for it I may collect recordings of them reading their pieces and edit together a “reading” of the project.
I’ll take 6 The Old Forest. Thanks Laith!
Great! I look forward to haiku on the 6th!
Wow that was fast 🙂 Thanks! Wrote it, finishing up the blog post now and scheduling it to publish on the sixth so I don’t have to try and remember 🙂 Thanks again for telling me about this awesome project! I’m really glad to be a part of it. What a cool idea!
I tweeted. Maybe that will get ya some more volunteers. In addition to my Knife, I’ll take The Ring Goes South and A Shortcut to Mushrooms.
Thanks! I will update the list.
I’ll tweet about it too – good idea N.E. White. I’ll take 8 & 13 as well.
chapters 8 and 13 have been written up and scheduled to be published on my blog on the 8th & 13th of February. Let me know if you need more in the future. I’d be happy to do more.
So, it looks like 17 and 19 are still open… I’d like them, if it’s ok for me to use the Haiku I posted on the other comment today… 🙂
They are yours.
P.S. If no one volunteers for 16, A Journey in the Dark, I’ll take that one too. I’d forgotten how much I love these books – it’s been too long since I reread them.
Let’s see if anyone else grabs it, if we get closer to the 16th and it is still open then you can have it.
Sounds great, just let me know! his has been so FUN and challenging for me. I like playing with poetry and words, but Haiku is difficult for long-winded people such as myself. 😉
I find them a good tool for practice at picking your words with care.
Indeed.
Rob has requested 16, I’m giving you first refusal. So let me know.
I’ll take 9 and 21 if they’re still available (arbitrary choices, but I’ll take ’em!)
I was wondering if you were going to join in. Take ’em!
Sweet. 😀
Ok, Laith? This is awesome. I haven’t read an entire chapter of a book in one sitting in so long. Looking forward to the 21st and then the Two Towers.
And if nobody has grabbed it, I’d love to take 16 – A Journey in the Dark.
JudahFirst requested requested that one if no one else asked. I will check if still wants it or not.
Hey, it’s cool! I just saw we still had a few open but if someone has claimed it then by all means. 🙂
Let’s see if JF still wants it. We left it loose in case of additional participants.
Yeah, I’m hoping we can attract some more, at the very least a few stragglers who will bring more for the next book. I like seeing how different people handle the haiku task.
Yes it is amazing the different forms that come from the simple 5/7/5
Sorry, Laith, I just say these comments. Wonder why they aren’t coming up in my comments… oh, maybe because they didn’t reply to my comment. Guess I have to turn on that “notify me of follow-up comments via email” thingy, huh?
Ok, that said, GO FOR IT, ROB! 🙂 I’m happy to get to participate with 17 and 19.
P.S. But if no one minds, when Rob has posted his, could I post the one I wrote for 16 here in a comment? I kinda like it. 🙂
I’m fine with that. Check with Rob and maybe you can put it in the comments on his post for 16 too.
Thanks, Laith! I like your idea of having more than one entry per chapter. I think it’s cool to see how people may use the Haiku format differently to interpret the same chapter.
I’m thinking of saying if you want to double a chapter you have to also claim an unclaimed one… if there is an unclaimed.
Oh, that’s a great idea! Hey, I love this whole project – especially since it’s working through one of the greatest books ever written! 😀
JudahFirst says go ahead.
I think I may alter the rules for book two so that folks who want to write for a chapter in common can do so.
Alright, sounds good.
Hey Laith, quick question: Will you post the entire haiku (of this part) at the end of Feb? Or will you do it at the end of March (to include the last book)?
End of April will be book 3. But yes I was thinking of a mega post summary.
Oh, yeah, duh. 😮
