A Blogger’s Journey: 2014, One Month In

So January is now behind us and was a month full of interesting posts and activity in the blogosphere.

At the beginning of the month, as part of the Zero to Hero event, I set myself some goals for the year, lets see how I’ve done after on month of refocused blogging.

  1. Post at least one substantial post per week.
  2. Contribute a substantive article to another venue each month (minimum).
  3. Build my stats back up to at least my 2012 levels, if not better.

Ok, two out of three goals met. Continue reading A Blogger’s Journey: 2014, One Month In

In The Shoes Of My Nemesis

“Blast that infernal man,” I threw my hat in the chair as I stormed past, “time and time again he is there, standing in my way.”

Grabbing the bottle of brandy, I poured a measure and slumped in the chair at my desk. “The smug look on his face when he solves the crime.”

Looking at the papers spread there, I sigh and collect the bunch in a pile.

“Months of research and planning. Gone! All because of that damn detective!”

Group Haiku Project: Fellowship of the Ring

I had such a great time with the Hobbit Haiku project that I thought it would be fun to do it again with the Lord of The Rings series, and throw it open to others to contribute.

So here is how I want this to work, if you are interested in contributing a haiku to the project please add a comment below on which chapter you want to take. For now one chapter per person, I will update the list as the chapters get claimed.

Review – The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

A week ago I was able to catch the latest installment of Peter Jackson’s telling of The Hobbit. I’ve had my doubts about the stretching of The Hobbit into three movies. Given that this particular work is around 350 pages and each of the Lord of the Rings books is one to two hundred more… Well since Jackson did one movie for each book of the trilogy, I just don’t get it.

Now with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, I was pleasantly surprised at how good a job he did with the added material pulled in from side references and other works of Tolkien. I did have my issues with the movie, the stone giants and part of the escape from goblin town come to mind, but on the whole I thought it was well done. I had high hopes that the second movie would do a similar job with respect to the source and just enhancing the story with the new material.

Unfortunately this was not the case.

I must give warning, from here on I slide into spoiler territory a bit. However since I am reviewing a movie based off a classic work, I think I should be ok. You have been warned. Continue reading Review – The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Looking Back/Looking Forward: 2014

As I’ve mentioned before, 2013 while full of a lot of great stuff for myself and my family didn’t really work out too great from a writing standpoint.

In November and especially December, I’ve managed to get back on the horse a bit. Thanks for that goes in part to Rob of Rob’s Surf Report for his Genre Haiku Challenges, so thanks!

The other day I was considering what blogging goal I could set for myself and realized that I kept aiming too high. While I have done nearly a full year of daily quotes in the past I started to get burned out, and my more reasonable goals last year were still too high.

So here are my blogging goals for the year.

  1. Post at least one substantial post per week.
  2. Contribute a substantive article to another venue each month (minimum).
  3. Build my stats back up to at least my 2012 levels, if not better.

When I am sitting down to write my first post of 2015 I want to look back and feel the year was a success, with most of my goals met or exceeded.

In the short-term for those who have followed me for a while, you can expect to see my continuing to finish the Hobbit Haiku project, more posts on science and family activities and probably some reviews.

So how was 2013 for you? What are you shooting for in ’14?

This post is based on today’s Daily Prompt: Progress and a bit of the Zero to Hero 30 day series.
